Cold Sore

Whether it’s to treat an active cold sore or prevent future cold sores, we offer antiviral medications for both.  We use Valacyclovir (Valtrex) or Acyclovir (Zovirax).  If you have used a certain medication in the past you may choose to use that again.  If this is your first-time using antivirals to treat a cold sore, we suggest using Acyclovir.

Acyclovir and Valacyclovir work the same and have the same side effects.  Acyclovir you must take 3x per day for 7 days.  Valacyclovir you must take 2x per day for 7 days.  The size of Valacyclovir pill is larger compared to Acyclovir.

To prevent a cold sore Valtrex is taken once daily, or Zovirax is taken twice daily.

If you are interested in antiviral medication, please start the medical questionnaire.  A health care professional will review your medical information to determine safety of treatment.  A prescription will be sent to your pharmacy of choice if appropriate.  More information will be provided for you at the end of the questionnaire or feel free to call, chat, or email us with questions.
